Starbucks...ends newspaper tradition! Profit vs. recycling paper?
Around the country, for decades, it has been a long-held tradition.
Americans usually trot into a coffee shop bright-and-early in the morning, order up a steaming-hot cup of java (or tea), chow down – and then – take a gander at the morning paper (not necessarily in that order).
Once a patron has scanned the headlines – and digested the news - the daily is usually tossed in a rack (or left on the table) so that another customer may recycle (peruse) the newspaper. When you consider how many trees are “murdered” to bring us the news each day, it’s an age-old tradition worth following, eh?
Well, for some inexplicable reason, the trend appears to have gone by the wayside at the local Starbucks outlet.
Uh-huh!
Over the past few days, the regulars at Starbucks in WeHo (across from 24-hour fitness) have been grumbling about the fact that the rack has up-and-disappeared from its ubiquitous spot at the front door.
Did a patron steal it – or – has management decided that the recycling practice interferes with sales – and ultimately – the Starbucks profit margin?
Suddenly, I am reminded of an old joke we used to tell when I was a kid.
What is black and white and read all over?
A newspaper!
If the foregoing trend continues at Starbucks, that may no longer be a truism, folks!
