Julian Ayrs Celebrity News...Kathryn Bigelow draws fire for "Zero Dark Thirty"! Angelina Jolie to direct! Rufus Wainright at Royce Hall!

Kathryn Bigelow…(who tried to direct my interview with her on the red carpet in Dallas at an AFI screening two years ago!) has stirred up a hornet’s nest with her depiction of the CIA in the just-released flick “Zero Dark Thirty”. The action thriller - based on the capture (and subsequent assassination) of known-terrorist Osama Bin Laden – alleges that Agents routinely engaged in torture techniques to extract highly-sensitive insider-information on Bin Laden’s whereabouts. In response, three Senators – Diane Feinstein, Carl Levin, and John McCain – have contacted Sony pictures by letter to express their concerns. Although the spine-tingling narrative does not purport to be a factual account of the Osama Bin Laden terrorist drama as it went down exactly, the politicians are inclined to pressure Sony Pictures into publishing a disclaimer since the filmmakers state at the commencement of the movie that the project is based on a true story. At press time, there was no direct response forthcoming from Bigelow or her boy-toy script-writer (cum boyfriend) Mark Boal. Stay posted for updates.

Angelina Jolie…when I first arrived in Hollywood years ago, one “quip” – “But, I really want to direct” – was the one often uttered up by actors anxious to take control of their careers – and ultimately – their destinies. In the case of Angelina Jolie, the thought of directing is obviously not just a "pipe dream". According to her handlers, Jolie is negotiating to take the helm for her first studio movie tentatively titled “Unbroken”. The true-life drama puts a spotlight on the life of an Olympian – Louis Zamperini – who survived in a raft for forty-seven days in the biting-cold ocean after a frightening near-fatal plane crash. According to Adam Fogelson (Chairman at Universal) the assignment is a good fit for Pitt’s steady squeeze. “She has a real ability to illustrate the strength in human spirit.” Well, we’ll see!

Martin Scorsese…is apparently anxious to lens a documentary on his next subject: Slick Willy (former scandal-ridden President Bill Clinton). In the past, the award-winning director has had his share of ups-and-downs. On the downside? A doc on “The Rolling Stones” – which should have been sure-fire hit – fizzled (and was generally panned as a critical failure). In recent days, Martin's role as Executive Producer on the “Boardwalk Empire” has rustled up accolades, however, According to inside sources, the Bill Clinton project will explore the President’s “perspective on history, politics, and the like during his time in office and the years since.” Do you suppose the Lewinski “affair” will ever see the light of day? It’s doubtful, when you consider that Clinton is apparently going to be cooperating fully. Depends on what you mean by "cooperating", eh? More fluff for the history buffs?

Rufus Wainwright...is slated to appear for a Holiday Concert at Royce Hall (which is aptly titled "Christmas 101). According to the promoters, the talented  crooner will be joined on stage with his sister (Martha Wainwright) as well as a posse of high-profile guests such as EmmyLou Harris and Carrie Fisher. Festive Carols and party favors are expected to make this yuletide bash a memorable one.  Tickets: www.ucla.edu
