A posse of filmmakers, movers-and-shakers, actors and wannabees descended in droves on the SKYBAR last night in trendy WeHo to mix-and-mingle courtesy of Roy M. Martins (who hosted), AFM, and the Film Portal.
The chic watering hole – off the lobby in the Mondrian Hotel – was the perfect setting for talent behind and in-front-of the camera to chat each other up, exchange ideas, you name it.
At times, the buzz in the room was so loud it was simply deafening!
As the elegant white curtains of the Cabana-style tents billowed in a refreshing cool night breeze, guests sipped on cocktails, networked like crazy, or simply stretched back like myself to take in the spectacular cityscape stretching out below the upper reaches of the glitzy Sunset Strip.
At my plum perch, I was able to scrutinize all the guests up-close, and boy did I get an eyeful.
From a fashion standpoint, the attendees ran the gamut from chic and stylish to a tad down-in-the-heels
Well, that’s Hollywood, for ‘ya!
I ended up having a delightful enlightening evening – in part due – to the party guests who slipped down on the plush comfy sofas on either side of me.
One director – Christopher Gauntt (who is planning to lens a feature on “Hamlet”) – excitedly plugged his upcoming project with great passion.
Although the articulate gent was open to the idea of an unknown in the lead role, he was quite emphatic about casting seasoned pros in the supporting parts to add a lot of prestige to the project.
The stumbling block?
Gauntt hasn’t rustled up the financing just yet.
In view of his ability to sell me on his vision, I proceeded to suggest that Harvey Weinstein might be a potential suitor worthy to pursue.
“I just zipped off an e-mail to him last week,” the outgoing dude informed me on the uptake.
"Be persistent," I advised.
On the other side of me, an attractive young gal by the name of – Paige De Ponte – disclosed her plans to produce a surfing flick.
At this juncture, the conversation shifted to Keanu Reeves and “Point Break”.
“Gosh, Reeves hasn’t done anything lately, has he?” was the common lament from guests around the table.
“He’s selective,” I piped up (I have a soft spot for the actor, after all).
At one point, when I attempted to take a quick jaunt to the little boy’s room, I was forced to fight my way through a crush of industry-types connecting furiously wall-to-wall on the tastefully-decorated pool deck.
For a Tuesday night, LA LA LAND was hopping alright!
Thank you Mr. Martens for a vastly entertaining night which I found quite stimulating.
The Vodka cocktails on-the-house made me a little bit tipsy, too!
Missed the cupcakes, though.
Damn!
‘Til next time, filmmakers!
