Every year when the American Film Festival rolls around, the programmers tout a handful of thought-provoking films with themes that put a searing spotlight on injustice, rights violations, and man’s inhumanity to man (you name it).
The truth of the matter?
It’s all for show.
The AFI is run by a posse of hypocrites who don’t care about the issues; instead, they’re out to rustle up accolades and make a name for themselves (and make big bucks in the process).
For example, last year shortly after I was issued my Press Pass to cover the ten-day festival, one handler stumbled on a post in which I criticized the way filmgoers and the media were treated.
In what was obviously a knee-jerk reaction, the publicity department fired off a rude and insulting e-mail in which they informed me that my credentials for coverage were being revoked.
In sum?
AFI was trying to silence my voice – and in the process – deny my right to freedom of speech (and freedom of the press).
This year, when I applied for my Press Pass (I thought I would take the high road and let bygones be bygones) the AFI simply ignored my request.
It just goes to show you how unprofessional and mean-spirited they are!
Other journalists have complained that unless they kow-tow to the organizers – leave their opinions and intelligence at the door, for example – that they'll be SOL when it comes to nabbing a coveted perch at all the red carpet ceremonies.
In fact, unless the media praises the fest, they may find themselves out the door, too.
It’s deplorable conduct – and an outrage – when you consider that the AFI is basically funded by the U.S. Government!
All residents should be allowed access, don’t ‘ya think?
The despicable behavior of the festival’s staff and publicity department is - in part due - to the man at the helm (Bob Gazzalle).
The big wig exec is a despicable corrupt inidivudal in my opinion!
Until the AFI stops denying individual rights – and being so elitist – I urge the media not to give them any coverage.
Amen!
