Though moviegoers may be unfamiliar with the Hollywood Film Awards, to industry-insiders, they are usually an indication as to who is on the fast track for an Oscar nod in the weeks ahead.
It’s no wonder, then, that the 16th Annual Hollywood Film Awards presentation last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel attracted a heavyweight A-list crowd.
Ben Affleck – who has been getting a buzz for "Argo" (which he directed and stars in) turned out with his cast all smiles – after nabbing the Best Ensemble Award.
Richard Gere – a seasoned pro now in his greying years – was honored with a Hollywood Career Achievement Award – by the way.
Meanwhile, the actor awards went to Bradley Cooper (male lead) and Marion Cotillard (female lead).
Other talents that were singled out include Quentin Tarantino (Best Screenwriter), Robert De Niro (Best Supporting Actor), Amy Adams (Best Supporting Actress), Judd Apatow (Hollywood Comedy Award), and John Hawkes (Best Breakout Performance Award), to name a few.
The Hollywood Film Awards (founded and run by Carlos de Abreu) are the first stop in the award season because of their place on the calendar.
According to the Los Angeles Times (a sponsor of the event) the celebrations launch the awards season officially.
In contrast to the Oscars - where winners often stumble up to the podium tongue-tied or ramble on incoherently for minutes on end until the stage manager pulls them off with a hook – the acceptance speeches are often refreshingly short.
For example, when “Beasts of the Southern Wild” was announced as a winner, the star strolled up and simply said “hello”.
The talented actress got more mileage out of that moment than any long-winded speech ever did at the Oscars over-the-years, I dare say.
Stay posted for upcoming award-show news!
