Almost Perfect...family drama starring Kelly Hu entertains!

In recent months a handful of feature films focusing on Asian-American characters have been premiering around the country – many of which – are International co-productions brought to the screen by savvy American and Chinese financiers.

The Producers – and the seasoned actors starring in the projects – are hopeful that American audiences in the mainstream are ripe for stories about their culture, their hopes, and their dreams.

"Almost Perfect" – an entertaining drama about an Asian-American family – has all the elements necessary to succeed – an attractive talented cast, a well-written script, and excellent production values.

Essentially, the film follows the main character Vanessa (played to perfection by Kelly Hu / X-Men 2) in her quest for true love.

Unfortunately, her dysfunctional family (a high-strung fashion-designer sister, wayward brother shirking his responsibilities, bitter Mother, and workaholic playing-the-field Dad) threaten to derail an “Almost Perfect” romance that just needs time, understanding, and nurturing.

It comes as no surprise that the project is well-produced when you consider the filmmakers behind-the-scenes who toiled on the creative endeavor.

For example, Bertha Bay-Sa Pan (writer/director) launched her directorial debut with “FACE” (starring Bai Ling) which won the Audience Award at the GenArt Film Festival and the Critics Award at the CineVegas Film Festival.

Derrick Tseng (Producer) was at the helm of the Venice Film Festival best screenplay winner “Life During Wartime” (penned by Todd Solondz).

Riva Marker (Producer) was Executive Producer of the Golden Globe Winner and Oscar Nominated “The Kids Are All Right”.

Although the film is a bit of a downer – storywise – there is a Hollywood-style ending that sends filmgoers out-the-door with a smile on their face and a bounce in their step.

3 stars!
