Fans of the horror genre packed the Regal Theatre last night to catch a sneak preview of "Sinister" and laugh with the DJ's from Power.106 who tricked and treated a handful of ticket-holders just before the frightening flick splashed (!!!) across the screen.
Uh-huh!
"Sinister" - unlike many "hatchet " movies which predictably go bump in the night - is a well
thought-out spine-tingling occult thriller - which manages to deliciously rustle up other-worldly intrigues that keeps the freaked-out audience on the edge of their seats throughout the gripping one-hundred-and-twenty-eight minute murder mystery.
There's a barrelful of heart-pounding thrills and chills in this vastly enertaining - and visuallly-stunning feature - you betcha!
But, I do have to issue a warning, folks.
"Sinister" is definitely not for the squeamish!
Sexy Ethan Hawke, sporting a tweedy-look (horn-rimmed glasses, cable-knit sweaters and GAP oversize jeans throughout) plays a true crime novelist down on his luck struggling to make sense of a bizarre series of serial killings which are somehow inexplicably intertwined.
The supernatural drama is well-crafted (fabulous cinematography, excellent direction, suspenseful sound effects, tight editing, you name it.
And, Hawke, is perfectly cast here.
In "Sinister" the seasoned pro inhabits the very skin of his character - and so - filmgoers can't help but be mesmerized (and root for him from the sidelines).
Is the author just drunk, or is his mind literally becoming unhinged?
And, most of all, the audience has to wonder - is there something to be fathomed from all this paranormal mumble jumble?
Although, I found the ending a bit pat - in view of the uniqueness of the tale - I understand why the screenwriter elected to saunter down the path he did (and tie up all the loose strings).
In my opinion, the director should have left a lingering doubt, though.
That was the punch "Sinister" needed at the end to hit it out of the ball park.
The producers struck out, instead.
It's a mediocre popcorn movie worth the price of admission.
3 Stars!
