"Least Among Saints" is a taut timely drama about a shell-shocked solider (who returns to U.S. shores after a tour in action overseas) who finds the transition back into society a difficult challenge to surmount.
Although, still in love with his wife, the relationship between the lead character and his ex-wife has become problematic because she has written him off as “damaged goods”.
In spite of a “restraining order”, though, Anthony (Martin Papazian) turns up at her door at the witching hour drunk as-a-skunk, trying to win her affections back.
Due to an unexpected turn-of-events, our soldier-boy is forced to take on the role of a father figure to a neighbor’s boy (Tristan Lake Leabu) after his mother overdoses on drugs.
At this point, the film really kicks into high-gear – in part due - to a remarkable performance by Leabu (which may stir up an Oscar buzz over the next few weeks).
Personally, I was surprised at the quality of “Least Among Saints”.
The filmmakers got the INDIE feature in the can for a paltry $800,000.00 (according to my inside sources).
The shooting schedule moved at a fast-clip, too.
“We shot it in nineteen days,” Martin Papazian beamed at a Q & A one night after a private screening at ICM in Century City.
I was particularly taken with the powerful seamless acting of all the actors involved, the crisp believable dialogue that made me laugh-out-loud on occasion, and the well-written vastly entertaining scenes that unfolded on the screen.
“Saints” is a little gem of a flick, folks!
Catch it if ‘ya can at a Theatre near you.
