Hitchcock...celebs turn out for splashy premiere! Middle-aged project bogged down!

Last night, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre rolled out the red carpet for the much-anticipated premiere of “Hitchcock” with a lot of fanfare.

A-list celebs slipped out of their sleek limos into the glare of the spotlight and into the arms of the frenzied paparazzi – at which point – they were ushered into the historic movie house to catch the flick.

If I’m not mistaken, I spied Peter Fonda outside on the "Walk of Fame" briefly. The talented actor, with lady-friend in tow, appeared to be amused by it all the hoopla.

One actor next to me noted that he was cast in a featured "extra" role by the director.

“Sasha used to come in to the restaurant where I worked. Nice guy. One day, he strolled in and informed me that he had a small part for me in the flick,” he gushed excitedly.

The lad was there to determine if he ended up on the cutting-room floor.

For Hitchcock fans - anxious to catch Anthony Hopkins in a role that is sure to trigger a lot of chatter - it was the hottest ticket in town.

Personally, I thought the celebrated actor missed the mark in a showy role that was more caricature than character fleshed out believably and seamlessly on the screen.

In contrast, Scarlett Johansson was radiant in her role playing Janet Leigh.

By the way, the film is a hatchet job on Hitchcock.

The film focuses on events surrounding the filming of “Psycho”, titillating gossip about his leading ladies, and an alleged strained relationship with his wife (played just so-so by Helen Mirren) which went down during the duration of the shoot.

I found the project to be middle-aged and sagging at the waist.

The director was out of his league here.

For me, the screening turned out to be a bit synchonistric, and for good reason.

For example, Tattler readers may recall that I posted a quote on “respect” yesterday morning.

Curiously, “Hitchcock” later made some remarks on the subject of respect, at the tail end of the film.

I hadn’t seen the film ‘til last night!

It's at times like this, that I feel as if I am in tune with the universe.

As for Hitchcock?

2 ½ stars.
